As long as there have been wars, persecution, thirst for land at the costs of
lives, prejudice, political intolerance, persecution and torture
there have been refugees

Give me your poor, your tired…
There are refugees and there are asylees in the United States.
Refugees have and annual quota set each year by the President. |
 |
Thee are not limitations on the number
of individuals who may be granted asylum. Refugees must have
a financial sponsor living inside the U.S. before an application
can be approved.
To qualify as a refugee, one must have experienced persecution in
the past or have a well-founded fear of persecution in the future
in your home country. That fact that you are suffering
economically is not really considered a reason for granting
refugee status. Persecution is defined as a serious threat
to your life or freedom. To apply for refugee status, you
must be outside of the United States. Other than this, there
is really no difference between an asylee and a refugee.
Once in the United States, you must file an asylum application
within one year after you arrived here. There are tow
exceptions. One, if you can demonstrate that there have been
changed circumstances in your home country, which have a great
effect on your eligibility, or secondly, there are "extraordinary"
circumstances why you didn't file within one year of arriving to
the United States. Whether you file before or after one
year, you can expect your case end up in court, as most cases
filed in the United States result in referral to the immigration
court where your case will be heard and decided by the one of over
200 federal immigration judges in the United States.
